Visionary writer and director R.T. Thorne has emerged as one of Canada's most eclectic storytellers since his start in music videos more than a decade ago.
His debut feature, 40 Acres, starring Danielle Deadwyler, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 and was named one of the 51 best Canadian films of all time by The Hollywood Reporter. The film won three Directors Guild of Canada Awards and nine Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Direction, Best Original Screenplay and the John Dunning Best First Feature Award for R.T.
In television, he was executive producer and director of The Porter, the Emmy-nominated historical drama for BET and CBC, and created, directed and executive produced Utopia Falls, the award-winning Afrofuturist YA science fiction series for Hulu. His episodic directing credits include Cross for Skydance and Amazon, The Lake for Amazon, Kung Fu for The CW and Blindspot for NBC.
R.T. credits his bold photographic eye to his years in music videos, where he earned an MTV award nomination and still holds the record for the most music video award wins in Canada.
As chair of the Directors Guild of Canada's BIPOC members committee, R.T. advocates for equity in film and television and against anti-Black racism. He continues to develop film and television from diverse cultural perspectives.
