Visionary writer/director R.T. Thorne has emerged as one of Canada’s most eclectic storytellers since debuting on the music video filmmaking scene over a decade ago.

R.T. is a multi-award-winning triple threat (director/writer/producer) whose debut feature film 40 ACRES stars Danielle Deadwyler and premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. On the television side, he served as the Executive Producer and Director for THE PORTER, an Emmy nominated historical drama for BET & CBC. He also created, directed, and executive produced the HULU original UTOPIA FALLS, an award-winning Afrofuturistic YA science fiction series. Other episodic directing credits include multiple episodes of THE LAKE for Amazon, KUNG FU for CW, and BLINDSPOT for NBC. Most recently, R.T. directed episodes of the upcoming CROSS series for Skydance and Amazon.

R.T.’s directing work has earned him a Canadian Screen Award, multiple Directors Guild of Canada nominations and an MTV award nomination. He credits his bold photographic eye to his work in the music video scene, where he still holds the record for the most music video award wins in Canada.

As Chair of the Director’s Guild of Canada BIPOC (BIack, Indigenous & People of Color) members committee, R.T. is committed to fighting against Anti-Black racism, and advocating for equality in the Film and TV industry. R.T. continues to follow his passion for storytelling, creating & developing commercially viable filmmaking properties from diverse cultural perspectives.
