Across commercial and music work, Karena has directed for brands including Adidas, Zillow, Crown Royal, Dolby, and Tinder, bringing her instinct for character, culture, and cinematic storytelling to the world of advertising. Her first-of-its-kind interactive experience "Swipe Night" for Tinder earned the Grand Prix at Cannes Lions in 2020. Her music video work includes landmark collaborations with Drake, SZA, Coldplay, and Chlöe, and most recently Kendrick Lamar and SZA's "luther," which earned a Cannes Lion, the Webby for Best Music Video, and Video of the Year at the 2026 JUNO Awards.
Her work has expanded seamlessly into film and television, with directing credits including P-Valley, Snowfall, Y: The Last Man, Gossip Girl, Dead Ringers, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Furious, as well as the upcoming Blade Runner 2099. Across every format, Karena brings the same intimate, culturally rooted sensibility to complex characters and stories that challenge convention.
In 2018, she became the first woman honoured with the Prism Prize's Lipsett Award. That same year, she took home Best Director at the MuchMusic Video Awards and Video of the Year at the BET Awards for Drake's "God's Plan," and she was named Director of the Year at both the 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards and the 2019 BET Awards. In 2024, she was honoured with The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment Breakthrough Award.
